Abstract | Background: Pregnancy is a special physiological condition where drug treatment is a special concern, because in addition to the health and life of mother, the health and life of her unborn child is also important. Pharmacists are being asked about medications use during pregnancy, either from patients, family, or friends, many may feel that they do not have enough knowledge to answer these questions confidently because this topic is rarely included in pharmacy school's curriculum. Objective: This study aims to assess the awareness about medications use during the pregnancy period among final year pharmacy students in Jordanian Universities. Method: This is a cross-sectional study on senior pharmacy students in the Jordanian universities. The pregnancy medication knowledge among students was assessed by using a questionnaire, a set of questions specifically designed for this purpose. The data was statistically analyzed by using IBM SPSS Software package, Version 19.0 Result A total number of (409) students were included in the study, 93.2% (n=381) of the students were Bsc pharmacy, and 6.8% (n=28) of them were pharm D. A percent of 36.7 (n=150) of the students were male, and 63.3% (n=259) of them were female. The majority of participants 76.2% (n= 312), stated that pregnancy medications is covered by pharmacology course in their study curriculum. In our study, 52.5% of the students could recommend only few drugs of pregnancy medications, most of the students (78.7%) had low knowledge in pregnancy medications and in their opinions, due to the lack of courses that covers this subject; More than half of the participants suggested adding an obligatory course to the current curriculum to improve their knowledge. Conclusion: A great number of senior pharmacy students had inadequate knowledge about medication used in pregnancy, and strategies to improve awareness and knowledge of pregnancy medications among senior pharmacy students in the Jordanian Universities, should be implemented, such as adding more courses and training in this field |
