Abstract | Non-communicable diseases such as endocrine and metabolic diseases (diabetes mellitus (DM), thyroid dysfunction, obesity and malnutrition) are the major causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide and are emerging as an important component of the burden of diseases in developing countries. Knowledge of the endocrine-related disease admission and mortality patterns will provide information into the prevalence of these problems, as well as useful tools for planning, delivering, and evaluating endocrinology-related health-care needs. So the identification of epidemiological trends in hospital admissions is essential for health-care planning and resource allocation. The main aim of this research was to explore the rate of hospitalizations related to endocrine, nutritional and metabolic diseases stratified by age and gender and to identify which endocrine, nutritional and metabolic diseases associated with higher hospital admissions rate and to identify the high risk population from England and Wales total population. Hospital admissions identified using the 10th version of the International Statistical Classification of Diseases (ICD) system. All the diagnostic codes for endocrine, nutritional and metabolic diseases (E00 - E89) used to identify all the hospital admissions. Rates of hospital admission with their 95% confidence intervals (CIs) calculated using the number of hospital admissions for each age group divided by the mid-year population of the same age group of the same year. The trend in hospital admissions assessed using a Poisson model. From our study we found a 187 % increase in the rate of metabolic, endocrine, and nutrition disorders hospital admissions in England and Wales in the period from 1999 to 2020. The admission rates for metabolic, endocrine, and nutritional diseases were highest among young adults (ages 15-59 years) at 44.4 %, followed by those aged 60-74 years at 23.7 %. No differences were observed in the rate of admission between males and females, both have similar hospitalization rate. The metabolic disorders, diabetes mellitus, and problems of other endocrine glands were the most common reasons for admission to a hospital for endocrine, nutritional, and metabolic diseases which contributed 48% ,29.8% and 8.5% respectively. |
