Abstract | The current study aims at investigating the issue of the measurement of oral proficiency. This study intended to examine the extent to which elicited imitation task as a measure of oral proficiency can predict learners' working memory capacity and general language proficiency. Data were collected from 150 Jordanian university students by administering three tests to measure the participants' oral proficiency (Elicited imitation task), working memory capacity (Backward- digit span test), and general English proficiency (Quick Oxford Placement Test). This study used a quantitative descriptive research approach to data collection and analysis. The results revealed moderate positive correlations between elicited imitation, and general English proficiency. Besides that, the results revealed a weak positive correlation between elicited imitation and working memory capacity. It was further found that elicited imitation had the power to predict L2 learners' working memory capacity and general English proficiency. Finally, the results advocated elicited imitation task as a reliable indicator of L2 oral proficiency. The findings can offer a number of implications and recommendations for research, theory and pedagogy which will be discussed in more detail. Key words: Elicited Imitation (EI), Oral Proficiency (OP), Working Memory (WM), General English Proficiency (GEP), Language Proficiency (LP) |
