Abstract | The problem of having computer spare parts that are slow-moving is common within manufacturing industries and also in the distributing companies especially to Arab World where production process of such items is either completely or partially missed. This contradicts with spare parts that are fast-moving but they are more critical, more expensive, and also more difficult when making their demand forecast. Furthermore, The Arab World represents a major market for the global exports of computer spare parts and serves as an important regional hub and store for companies producing such items, therefore, inventory management of slow moving spare parts becomes more complicated. The need for having efficiency in the inventory management of slow-moving spare parts is vital in the utilization of capital and in reduction of logistic costs. Currently, there is no wide attention being given by researchers in the management of computer spare parts that is significant to inventory management of slow-moving items. This creates a room for this type of research to be carried out. This research was conducted at Computer Hardware and Software Companies in Jordan. The area which was focused on was the department of inventory management and the target sample was the staff working at this inventory management department. Data collection was done through making interviews and questionnaires with the staff at this computer spare parts company. Consequently, the results of this analytical and field study revealed that the factors which influence inventory management of slow moving computer spare parts include the production cost of these spare parts, selling prices of computer spare parts, obsolescence, computer technician's availability and spare parts dependence availability besides transport cost incurred during the maintenance duration. For demand forecast conducted during the study, the results obtained indicated that the demand for adapters and chargers would increase by 20% by the end of the year. This demand forecast was carried out using the Croston's model. The percentage of the profits made by these companies is 48% based in sales record of these companies, and this calls for some interventions in order to prevent future losses from occurring to the company. Results of this study are helpful to the management of Computer Hardware and Software Companies in Jordan as well as other industries that deal with slow-moving items. These results will help in making inventory management of slow-moving items to be less complicated. Results of this study may also be of help to the revenues authority since they get to know the profit got by these types of industries and hence, to make estimation of taxes they are supposed to charge industries dealing with slow-moving items such as equipment spare parts. As we put our concentration on the Computer Hardware and Software Companies in Jordan, the disadvantages of using the traditional ABC classification model have been revealed. Hence, there is a need to have an ABC classification that is improved which takes into consideration the criticality of the computer spare parts that are slow-moving. |
