Abstract | Traditionally, engineers and construction managers attempt to build structures with maximum quality, least cost, least effort and least construction duration. Wastage that occurs in construction is an obstacle against achieving least cost and duration of construction. Wastage, commonly known as construction waste, could result in waste of material, machinery, monetary, or manpower. The source of building construction waste could occur during planning, designing, procurement, construction, and even during occupation and usage of structure. The objectives of this research are to investigate the sources and causes of wastage; to identify measures and techniques currently employed for waste minimization; and to provide practical recommendations to eliminate, minimize and control building construction waste at construction sites in Jordan. A structured questionnaire was prepared to get the opinion of respondents, namely contractors, consultants, and owners, on the major sources and causes of material waste, on the measures and strategies currently employed, and to get the opinions of respondents on the building materials that mostly contribute to material waste along with the level of wastage of these materials. The study concluded that the parties involved in the construction projects are aware of the problem of wastage of material and have plans for the management of material waste. However, these plans might not be implemented due to lack of staff training and the unawareness of staff of the need to minimize waste. Furthermore, over reliance of the main contractors on the subcontractor is a major cause of material wastage. It's also, concluded that the most important cause of waste is "Selection of low quality material within the design and specification; followed by unnecessary material handling". In addition, it's concluded that "Sand, aggregate and ceramic tiles" are the three most material generators of wastes in construction building sites. The study found that the level of waste of materials was approximately ranging from 5 to 14%. Strategies currently implemented to minimize construction waste, are a combination of reusing, recycling, and reducing waste at the source of origin. The study emphasized on the following additional techniques: preparation of a waste management plan, training of staff on minimization of wastage, policies to be made by government to enforce implementations of waste minimization techniques. |
