Abstract | Nowadays, the huge increase in power demands and the importance of electricity in our life and its continuity, many firms are realizing the need for the use of proper maintenance of electric facilities and systems. Power plants, generators, substations and equipment are becoming technologically more sophisticated and difficult to control beside that any interruption in power supply will cause losses to the industry and economy. Therefore, the importance of maintaining and improving availability, performance efficiency, on-time deliveries, safety requirements and overall plant productivity are becoming more needed. In this context, Jordanian electricity industry are more and more realizing the importance of the maintenance function. This thesis objective is to assess the maintenance management practices, operational performance and the problems facing maintenance function in electricity companies in Jordan. To achieve this goal, a questionnaire was designed in order to investigate maintenance needs and problems, namely, maintenance planning, automation implementation and barriers, maintenance barriers, productivity measurements and staff training needs and assessment. The questionnaire was distributed on a selected sample of Jordanian electric companies and was filled, mostly, through a questionnaire and personal interviews. A verity electric industry companies from all different existing sectors and from all sizes responded to the questionnaire. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS to determine the relationship between operational performance and maintenance management practices and management support. It was found that most of the electric firms in Jordan are local owned companies and a part of larger organization, and big percentage of the firms are less than 10 years in operation with majority of them having more than 100 employee. Most of the firms are mostly automated or fully automated. Majority of the companies apply preventive maintenance alongside with breakdown maintenance as a strategy for their maintenance department. Nearly 23.6% of the respondent firms were found not utilizing of any Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS), but 41.3% and 34.5% are using CMMS or plant to use in their maintenance scheduling and planning. The study found out that the level of top management support for maintenance management was low. This was causing a decline effect on operational performance. Further, it was observed that the extent of application of maintenance management practices had a positive impact on operational performance. In this study, the main problems in maintenance were highlighted. Finally, conclusions regarding the current situation of maintenance in Jordanian electricity industry was stated.
