Abstract | Background: Asthma is one of the most common chronic inflammatory diseases of the airways, presenting with wheezing, chest tightness, and shortness of breath. However, these symptoms may vary in appearance, frequency, and intensity. Aim: This research aims at examining the clinical and therapeutic characteristics of asthmatic patients. In addition, this research explored the direct medical cost of inpatient management for asthmatic patients. Method: A cross-sectional retrospective descriptive study design was conducted because it could achieve the study objectives quickly and explore associations between study variables. This study used data on hospitalized patients due to asthma at Prince Hamzah Hospital, Amman, Jordan, a public hospital in Amman, the capital of Jordan. Data was extracted for the duration between January 2021 - July 2022 using patients' medical records. Logistic regression analysis conducted to identify significant predictors of longer length of stay and higher hospitalisation cost. Results: A total of 241 patients were hospitalized during the study period. The mean age was 50.3 (SD: 23.4) years. The mean duration of the disease was 5.8 years (SD: 2.0). The most common symptom was a dry cough (90.5%). The median number of exacerbations was 2.0 (interquartile range: 1.0-3.0). The most commonly used therapeutic class of asthma medications was long-acting beta-adrenoceptor agonists combined with inhaled corticosteroids (92.9%). The median duration of stay for patients with asthma was 3 days, with an interquartile range of (1.0-5.0). Patients who smoke have a higher odds ratio of staying longer (2.1-fold), and their previous admission history in the previous year has a higher odds ratio of staying longer (p 0.05). The hospital stay median cost was (75.0 JOD) with an interquartile range of (46.5-123.0) ,and the medication median cost was (43.0 JOD, with an interquartile range of (25.5-56.0), which sums up to a total admission median cost of (119.0 JOD) with an interquartile range of (93.0-161.5). Elderly patients had 2% higher possibility to have higher admission cost for asthma complications compared to others, married patients by (2.6 fold), those who are smokers by (4.9 fold) and those with higher number of comorbidities by (40.0%) more likely to have higher admission cost for asthma complications compared to others (p?0.01). Conclusion: Asthmatic patients are prone to a wide variety of symptoms upon their admissions to the hospital. Asthma complications are associated with a considerable duration of stay and medical costs. Further studies are warranted to identify risk factors for asthma exacerbations that can be prevented through patients' education. Keywords: Asthma; Cost; Hospitalisation; Jordan |
