Abstract | The present study aimed to examine the prevalence of urinary tract infections (UTIs) in pregnant women residing in Jordan while also exploring associated risky behaviors and the emergence of antimicrobial resistance. Our study involving a cohort of 536 individuals, Escherichia coli was determined to be the prevailing causative agent, with urgency emerging as the predominant symptom. The study revealed a considerable prevalence of UTIs at 65%, with a noteworthy proportion of cases being asymptomatic. This finding underscores the significance of addressing asymptomatic UTIs in the context of pregnancy. The antibiotic combination of amoxicillin and clavulanate exhibited the greatest level of resistance when compared to other antibiotics that were tested. This underscores the importance of employing judicious antibiotic practices in order to effectively address the issue of antibiotic resistance. The findings of the study indicate that there is a lack of regulation and awareness regarding antibiotic access and self-medication. This highlights the need for improved measures, such as better regulation and awareness campaigns, to encourage the responsible use of antibiotics. Pregnant women demonstrated commendable adherence to prescribed antibiotic regimens, underscoring the significance of diligently completing the entire course of treatment for optimal therapeutic outcomes. The results of the regression analysis demonstrated a statistically significant relationship between a higher body mass index and an elevated risk of UTI during pregnancy. Additionally, the study found that dietary patterns and hygiene practices also played a significant role in UTI susceptibility. The utilization of cotton-based undergarments demonstrated a discernible protective impact against UTIs. In conclusion, this thesis offers valuable perspectives on the risk factors and prevalence of UTIs during pregnancy, highlighting the importance of prudent antibiotic utilization and preventive strategies to promote optimal health outcomes for both mothers and fetuses. Health authorities ought to implement focused interventions aimed at enhancing community awareness and promoting improved practices. |
