Abstract | The utilization of herbal medicines in managing diabetes mellitus presents a prevalent practice among Jordanian patients, driven by beliefs in their efficacy and safety. This cross-sectional survey study aimed to investigate the prevalence, patterns and perceptions surrounding the use of medicinal plants among individuals diagnosed with diabetes in Amman, Jordan. Conducted between August and October 2023, the study encompassed 1004 participants recruited through convenience sampling from the National Center for Diabetes, Endocrinology and Genetic Diseases. A structured questionnaire collected demographic data, diabetic history, medication details, herbal usage habits, information sources and perceptions regarding herbal remedies. Findings revealed varied beliefs among patients regarding the efficacy and safety of herbal products, with older individuals and females more inclined towards herbal medicine use. A significant portion possessed higher education qualifications, yet the educational level didn't correlate significantly with herbal medicine usage. Concurrent health conditions like dyslipidemia and hypertension were prevalent among diabetic patients, highlighting the interconnectedness of various health issues with diabetes. A majority of patients refrained from using herbal products, citing doubts about their efficacy in reducing blood glucose levels. Cinnamon (54.3%)and olive leaf (27.9%) were among the most used herbal remedies, attributed to their availability and perceived benefits in managing blood glucose levels. Information sources primarily included friends and family(19%), indicating a reliance on non-professional advice The study highlights the need for improved patient education and clearer communication between healthcare providers and patients about herbal product usage, suggesting the implementation of structured guidelines and educational initiatives to promote safer and more informed diabetes management practices. |
