Abstract | This thesis explores the use of grotesque Gothic symbols in Edgar Allan Poe's short fiction and aims to decode their deeper meanings. By analyzing selected stories such as "The Fall of the House of Usher," "Ligeia," "The Tell-Tale Heart," "The Black Cat," and "The Cask of Amontillado," this research sheds light on Poe's masterful storytelling and his exploration of themes such as mystery, the supernatural, madness, and murder. Through a qualitative descriptive analysis, this study examines the symbolic language employed by Poe, and explores the intricate layers of symbolism within each narrative. The study begins with a general introduction, presenting the research problems, aims, and objectives. It includes a literature review on Poe and Gothic literature, highlighting the significance of decoding Gothic symbols. The thesis then tries to decode the symbols of mystery and the supernatural in selected stories, followed by an exploration of symbols related to madness, darkness, and murder. The findings reveal the profound insights into Poe's exploration of the human psyche, the consequences of moral decay, and the complexities of revenge. The symbols function as essential elements in creating an atmosphere of terror and suspense, while also conveying deeper themes and emotions. The analysis reveals how symbols such as decaying mansions, haunting atmospheres, resurrections, and metaphors contribute to the Gothic ambiance and evoke a sense of fear.
