Abstract | Investigating the speech features and speech acts in politicians' speech of female leaders has captivated substantial research attention recently. Some studies claimed that female politicians use the same speech features and speech acts of their male counterparts, while others claimed they stick to a more feminine approach. To settle this debate, this study aimed at investigating women's speech features and speech acts that were used in two female politicians' discourse, i.e., Margaret Thatcher and Liz Truss. In addition, this study investigated to what extent the speech features and speech acts of female political leaders are exclusively used by female speakers and whether their discourse features reflect their personality and ideology. This study used a qualitative-descriptive approach for data collection and analysis. Data were collected from YouTube, as five video clips were selected for each female politician. This study adopted Lakoff's model (1975) of women's speech features and Austin and Searle's model (1969) of speech acts. Data were transcribed using Jefferson's transcription system (2004). The findings revealed slight differences in the women's speech features and the speech acts that were used by both female political leaders in terms of frequency and functions. Moreover, the findings indicated that the two female leaders attempted to emphasize their femininity characters and ideology, while ensuring that they could handle their full responsibilities towards their people and country.
