Abstract | This study aimed to explore the most common factors that cause foreign language anxiety and lack of motivation in speaking English among EFL university students in Jordan. To achieve the purpose of the study, a questionnaire was developed by the researcher to collect the needed data. The questionnaire consisted of three parts. The first part covered the biographical variables (gender, age, study level, and GPA). The second part covered the anxiety scale that included the internal factors (Confidence, shyness, mistakes), and the external factors which included (lack of preparation, limited vocabulary, and friends/classmates) with 35 items. The third part covered the lack of motivation scale, which included teaching material and assignments, discussion, feedback, intrinsic lack of motivation, and extrinsic motivation. Students were asked to answer a 5-point Likert Scale basis. This questionnaire was applied on 450 EFL students from Isra University, Petra University, Middle East University and the University of Jordan, who counted for 2400 EFL students in the academic year 2021-2022. The results showed that language anxiety related to the estimation of students' response on both the internal and external factors was moderate, though the former was a little higher. In addition, the estimation of the students' response to the extrinsic motivation (assignments, projects, exams) and discussion, feedback, as well as intrinsic lack of motivation was high, while the estimation of the students' response on teaching material and assignments was moderate, where the overall estimation on the lack of motivation was high. More importantly, the study found that language anxiety is more impacted by internal factors such as shyness and mistakes, and by the external factors such as lack of preparation and limited vocabulary, where lack of motivation is more impacted by the combination of extrinsic and intrinsic factors when it comes to their motivation. Moreover, it was found that there were some significant differences in both language anxiety and lack of motivation that could be attributed to gender, age, and Grade Point Average (GPA). Keywords: Foreign language anxiety, lack of motivation, speaking English, EFL university students. |
