ملخص الرسالة
Investigating the challenges that face ethnic minority groups in maintaining their indigenous languages is a projecting subject that appeals ample research attention. This research study aimed at exploring the domains of language use of the Chechen and Circassian in Jordan. The study further explored the attitudes towards minority languages and the factors that contributed to language shift and maintenance of the Chechen and Circassian languages. Data were collected by administering a questionnaire to 178 Chechens and 175 Circassians. The quantitative method based on a questionnaire was used in this research study. The findings revealed that both the Chechens and Circassians use their ethnic language in limited domains including family and friends, while Arabic is used in a wider range of practical domains. Furthermore, it was found that though Chechens and Circassians highly value their native languages, this positive attitude does not contribute significantly to language maintenance. Finally, a number of cultural, economic, anthropological and attitudinal factors were found to play key roles in the Chechens and Circassians language maintenance and language shift from the minority language to Arabic. They are further discussed accordance to the relevant theories and previous reviewed research. Keywords: Language Shift, Language Maintenance, Minority Languages, Chechen Language, Circassian Language.
