Background: violence towards healthcare staff is a global issue that has put healthcare professionals' physical and mental welfare at risk. Furthermore, violence towards healthcare staff has a negative impact on healthcare services provided to patients, hence affecting negatively the quality of the healthcare provided. This research has two objectives: (1) to study the prevalence of workplace violence towards physicians and nurses in Jordanian public hospitals (2) to investigate the link between the exposure to violence and workplace environment by evaluating the impact on: (i) interaction between staff and patients (ii) work responsibility (iii) decision-making and (iv) stability of work (job satisfaction, job burnout and turnover intention).
Methods: An observational cross-sectional study with a sampling methodology to collect data from March 2022 till May 2022. Three public hospitals in three governorates in North, Middle and South of Jordan were chosen as research sites. We used a combination of descriptive statistical analysis, a univariate analysis, and regression statistical analysis to study the prevalence and impact of violence towards healthcare professionals on communication between staff and patients, impact on work responsibility, impact on decision-making and impact on career.
Results: Regression analysis found that violence explained a significant portion of variance in workplace environment. From these results, it can be observed that verbal, physical, sexual harassment are positively and significantly associated with impact on the workplace environment.
Conclusions: The results show that violence towards healthcare staff in Jordanian public hospitals has a negative impact on the workplace environment which highlights the need for measures and interventions to mitigate the risk of such high impact on the level of service provided in the healthcare sector.
