ملخص الرسالة
The ancient Roman theaters in Amman and Jerash are historical monuments of great value for Jordan. The stone columns and portals that ornament the roads and courts in these places have been free-standing for centuries, and they may have faced strong earthquakes during their lifetime.
In this research the dynamic behavior of free-standing multi-drum columns and frames are studied using the Finite Element Method. In order to be able to validate the numerical results of the finite element model , experimental results obtained by other researchers were used. Multi-drum columns and also frames exited by simulated seismic load have been considered in both experimental and numerical models. After validation the finite element models were used to investigate of the dynamic behavior of scaled and full scale real multi-drum columns and frames in Jordan under real seismic record.
The Zeus column and portal frame have shown high level of resistance to moderate seismic activity, with little damage or permanent deformation. The portal frame, in particular, was found to be more stable than single multi-drum columns, and was able to withstand even extremely harsh seismic excitations without collapsing.
