A Contrastive Study of the Relationship between Spelling and Pronunciation in
                                        English and Arabic

                                         Wajih Abderrahm

This paper aimed to investigate the role of Arabic derivation in translating English
collocations. The study first sheds light on some aspects of Arabic morphology with special
reference to derivation claimed to be thoroughly investigated both by Arab linguists and
orientalists. The concept ofcollocation and its history are the tackled. An attempt is also made
to revisit the history of collocation whose discovery is unanimously thought to be attributed to
Firth in the sixties of the twentieth century. Finally, some major problematic areas in
translating collocations from English into Arabic with special reference to the role of
derivation in this process are addressed. 102the commonly held views about Arabic
orthography and some aspects of English phonology. The paper is divided into two
parts; part one tackles the relationship between English spelling and pronunciation
whereas part two investigates that relationship in Arabic. The researcher came to the
conclusion that the relationship between English spelling and pronunciation is
mainly unsystematic partly because of language change without introducing spelling
reform to cope with that sort of change. It was also noted that in light of
phonological counterexamples that the view about the distribution of the voiced
palato-alveolar fricative sound does not hold.As far as the relationship between Arabic
spelling and pronunciation is concerned ,it was found that it is mainly consistent and that,
apart fromfew exceptions, it is phonetic. Besides, the number of Arabic lettersunanimously
agreed upon in linguistic circles is not quite accurate. Finally, the paper concludes with some
recommendations.
