EVALUATION OF PERMEABILITIY AND POROSITY OF SELF-
COMPACTING CONCRETE AND THEIR RELATION WITH COMPRESSIVE

                                            STRENGTH

The penetration of aggressive liquids will depend upon the degree of permeability of
concrete. The extent of frost action also depend upon the permeability and porosity of
concrete. In the present experimental investigation the main concentration is focused on
permeability and porosity properties of self-compacting (SCC) concrete mixes and their
relation with compressive strength. The flow properties tests of SCC are conducted for
their permissible limits, then the final proportions of ingredients and admixtures have
been finalized to four groups for SCC and one group for normal concrete (NC) mixture
as a reference for comparison. Tests for the permeability, porosity and compressive
strength were conducted. It was concluded that the porosity and permeability of the
SCC is less than that of the NC and no clear relationship between permeability and
porosity of the SCC has been identified. Some of SCC mixtures prepared using
different ratios of viscocrete, silica fume and water to cement showed a decrease in
permeability with an increase in the porosity, while the behavior was different when
using constant viscocrete ratio and variable ratios of silica fume and water to cement.
