Analyzing the Language of Resistance in a Postcolonial Poem by Jiryes Samawi
                                      Rema Eid Asioqattash

The aim of this paper is to analyze the language of resistance, in Jiryes Sammawi's
poem" Here He is Born like Palm Trees", in the light of central issues of post
colonialism. Jeryes Sammawi is a Jordanian poet who wrote this specific poem as a
reaction to the Palestinian Uprising, highlighting through the language of resistance
how the children of Palestine fought the armed Israili forces by stones. The poem
belongs to postcolonial literature that reacts to the discourse of colonization. The study
will apply postcolonial literary criticism to explore the language and experiences of
resistance with a view to establishing the anti-colonial reactions permeating Samawi's
poem in which the Palestinians are portrayed as freedom lovers who have to resist the
Jewish army. The Palestinian children represent resistance as evidenced in the
condemnation of oppression. They are members of the marginalized group involving
persons socially, politically, and geographically outside of the hegemonic power
structure. The children's reactions reveal a case and strategy of resistance against
colonialist ideology, as evidenced in the condemnation of the Israeli colonial army. The
existence of discursive resistance in the poem and the will to give a voice to the
marginalized therefore establishes" Here He Is Born Like Palm Trees" as a postcolonial
work.
