As part of its ongoing efforts to develop its students' clinical and practical skills, the Field Training Committee at the Faculty of Pharmacy organized the OSCE exam for the Field Training 2 course, which will be offered for the first time during the first semester of the 2024-2025 academic year.
Field Training 2 aims to develop students' practical proficiency through intensive training in hospitals, as well as exposure to work experience in pharmaceutical factories. This enhances their readiness for the job market and helps them apply academic knowledge in a real-life professional environment.
The exam is designed to simulate clinical reality through interactive scenarios that test students' skills in dealing with patients and healthcare staff in a professional manner, as well as assess their ability to make sound decisions in various pharmaceutical situations.
The exam was divided into two main sessions, each with a specific objective to assess the student's skills:
The first session focused on drug calculation skills. Students were asked to calculate the appropriate drug dosage for each patient based on the doctor's prescription, taking into account individual differences between patients, such as age, weight, kidney and liver function, and co-morbidities. The student's ability to select the appropriate drug formula and adjust dosages according to approved pharmaceutical equations was also assessed, ensuring the accuracy and safety of treatment.
The second session focused on safe and effective intravenous medication preparation skills. Students were assessed on their ability to provide correct instructions on how to prepare intravenous mixtures according to sterile and safety standards, as well as ensuring the appropriate dose and concentration for each patient. This session also required students to communicate effectively with the healthcare team, including doctors, nurses, and pharmacists, to ensure optimal drug care.
The OSCE exam for Field Training 2 was prepared, organized, and monitored by Ms. Aya Daghash, Academic Supervisor of Field Training, who oversaw all phases of the exam to ensure the achievement of the desired learning objectives. A number of members of the Field Training Committee also participated in evaluating the students and conducting the exam, including: Ms. Hanin Al-Muhaisen, Dr. Nour Jamhawi, and Dr. Louay Al-Saloumi.
